Do the same laws apply to shotguns as handguns when transporting from state to state ?

No. Very different.
In most states it is illegal to carry a loaded long gun in a vehicle.    When I travel  for hunting my shotgun and rifles are stored on locked cases. And the ammo is stored in a separate locked ammo case
