ok so I received my new 100 amp charger in today, its 1/2 the size and weighs 1/4 of the weight. has technology gone this far since 1987? the one i pulled out was a 35 amp and weighs 50 pounds, this new one is 100 amp and weighs 10 pounds. what gives?

24 years ago TVs were large, heavy devices that were as deep as they were wide.  Today they hang on a wall.

In 1987 popular computers included the Apple II and Commodore 64.  IBM had just introduced the first upgrade to their PC-XT, the 286.

So yes, technology has advanced a bit since then.  ;)

Your old converter was analog.  It had a heavy iron core transformer coupled to a pair of diodes to convert the transformer's AC to DC.  The new converter is a switching power supply, similar to computer power supplies.  The incoming AC is switched on and off at a very rapid rate to get the correct output voltage.  This gives smoother power and better voltage regulation than the older designs.

lol i understand now how the new converter  is changing AC to DC. i can see why its so small now.
