Membership campgrounds can work or not, depending on what you are looking for and your style of travel. Some people like having a few fixed places to go, getting to know the other campers (with a similar outlook) and maybe participating in organized activities at the member park(s). Others prefer to travel and see different places, in which case it may be difficult to get your money's worth from even a chain of membership parks.
If you are thinking of buying into a single or chain of sites, look for resales - they are widely available and nearly always much cheaper than buying from the resort itself. Ebay is one source, but there are resale brokers who handle them as well. Google 'campground resale' to find some of them.

We belong to a park in S. TEX. Have never been to the park. Bought the membership for $90.00 with a $90/year fee. We got an RPI membership that we use. We had a CTC and they are similar. We can stay for $10/night in many parks. Check the location of parks in the area that you travel. We travel AZ and CA a lot and use the parks 4-6 weeks a year. Definately buy a resale. They say a new membership can be resold. That is true, but a $7000 membership is only worth about 5-$700 on the resale market. The transfer fees and yearly fees can be quite expensive. Do your homework.

Agree with cpeters. Buy low if you are interested; i.e. a resale membership or find a park that will get you into a network at the lowest price. If you pay $5k and up, you need to really think about using the benefits to get the value.
Another thing from experience: Some membership programs like Western Horizons are having real financial issues in this economy. Lots of the membership parks are frankly past their prime and do not compare favorably to well-managed private campground properties. Bottom line, do your homework before you spend money.
