Engine temp monitor

The major disconnect with the 8.1 vortec is omitting rich/lean from tripping the engine light. Maybe for a good reason but that event is more plausible for an undetected overtemp than "sudden loss of coolant", which by definition a coolant sensor alarm may not trigger on anyway if there's air in the block. Seems going by engine temp to detect a lean condition the horse has already left the barn. Engine temp is something to monitor for sure and there's a dash gauge for that. Using OBD I monitor while underway for short, long term trim and O2, and it would tell me immediately there's something amiss. Beyond that, there's only so much you can do.
