In the early days we didn't need a computer or modem to communicate:

I need one of those. What a bowlful that would be. ;D

300 baud, download message headers, read and respond, upload later. 

FIDO Net.  Never did much with it, but my friends son ran a hub, or whatever they called it. 

 
here is the latest scammers,
they send emails starting with "hiya call me 9998887777"  "howdy cal me 9998887766" "where is this"
anyways you get my drift, they add phone numbers that seem legit but most of the time they are no longer in service.
