We have had a couple occasions where a stove burner control was bumped and turned on, slowly leaking propane.  Being home, we were able to smell it before it set off the detector, but had we been out, it could have been more serious.

Twice I as I have gone into peoples RV's I have smelled propane.  They did not.  Think odor often is not noticed as it builds.  Both times the oven pilot lite had gone our.  The stuff can be sneeky.  We have moved the stove front knobs several times when cleaning or just resting against them.  Happened when some guy we know was tweeking our computer and I was watching <g>

We have the hand held propane sniffer and use it a lot.  I check around the tank - along the lines to the stove, refrigerator, furnace and water heater.  I don't have a working detector anymore in the mh so use the hand held.
