The first time I lifted the Hood of my Mercedes-Benz Sprinter VAN. On the Passenger side, is a Bar latch that holds the hood up. In reading Tips # 260, for vans. Once I almost over-closing, the hood. Which would have damaged it and have been on guard ever since. I thought this link might be more informative. and pan down the page to Tip# 260, on Mercedes-Benz "Hood Lift Struts "Click Here."
