I have no idea why he would say that, other than he may not have THEN believed in homespun type remedies. My only thought on it was that not an awful lot of people were enthused back then with the hippy ideas which sort of sprung the getting back herbal/homespun stuff. We were still pretty close to the discovery of the miracle drug Penicillan and others that came after, and what they could cure quickly. After all these years, we can look back and smell the roses (or Vicks) and weigh the differences.
