Here is a question as well: anyone have experience with the KOA membership program?  It'd be great to pay a lump sum and get to use the campgrounds whenever we want, but I don't see that option anywhere :) Guess we are stuck with 10% off and a point system?

I don't believe that KOA has a membership program like C2C, etc.  The best you get is the 10% discount with the KOA card.  You would be better off joining Passport America, the payback for a year's membership is about 3 nights camping at half price.

The first time you arrive at a KOA, they'll ask if you have their membership and will explain the discounts.  We only join in the years we know we'll be using them a lot.  We had two years in a row where we visited family and went to reunions where the nearest campgrounds were KOAs.  We had some decent savings those two years and they had some kind of discount the third year that we also were able to use.  Don't feel you have to join or renew.

None of the memberships, whether KOA or PA, are good if their campgrounds aren't where you want to go!  As long as you have a good campground directory you don't have to restrict yourself to membership camping unless that's what you want to do.  We use our Good Sam or FMCA discounts and they serve us pretty well.  Unless you want to travel from one membership campground to another, I wouldn't worry about any membership until I get to a destination where one is usable.

Thanks Ardra and Ned.  We have a Good Sam membership so I will look into using that.  We just made the long from Los Angeles to Dallas in less than 36 total hours- a trip of about 1500 miles.  We'll be camping out at a truck stop just outside of downtown Dallas while attending a convention in town and trying to conserve water/electricity as much as possible!
