Hello,

What are the technical spec and features to decide if a travel trailer is more off road capable  than other ones?

Which lighter travel travelers are more off road capable realizing that off-roading is not a key design criteria?

Northwoods Mfg. (Artic Fox, Snow River & Nash) have a robust, certified off-road chassis and higher ground clearance.  Aliner Expedition with off-road package as well.  But a lot depends on how you define off-road, because regardless whether a TT is rated off-road, too much bouncing around will have an adverse effect on a TT, not to mention the contents.

You will probably have to go off continent to find what you are looking for.

I think a lot of it has to do with clearance. I have a lite TT but it sits very close to the ground. If an offroad trip meant lots of holes and such I would not do it. If it was a flat dirt road yes I would. Not sure about a wash board effect, too much bouncing for the TT. Cathy

Check out the Jeep campers available here:

The website info will show you what's taken into consideration for true off-raod trailer capability. IMHO, it seems to mainly focus on trailer ground clearance and a full-swivel coupler (ie no ball mount to pop off while running down that dry creek bed). Shovover made a good point, too, about checking out the Australian camper options. The Aussies seem to have a lot more wild open boondock type camping than we do here in North America, and their toys reflect that!

FWIW, you might be able to mod a standard tent trailer to suit - lift kit, off-road tires, off-raod coupler, maybe beef up the axle? Depends how hard you intend to be on whatever you're towing, I think. The end result might be a bit heavier than you'd like, though. What are you towing with?

All trailers are capable of going off road.

But not all are capable of coming back without damage.  I know mine would bottom out the drain plumbing with just a slight dip in the trail.
