I'll second BigLarry's mention of Delorme Topo North America -- I've been using it for years, in addition to the Garmin Base Camp (it replaced their Mapsource). It's a topo map, in addition to planning routes, and it has many neat features. Sadly, it's been discontinued since Garmin bought DeLorme, though you can still find it on Amazon, among other places. Grrrr...
