I've always heard the phrase as "Picking fly s**t out of the pepper".  Same thing, almost.

My uncle always added "wearing boxing gloves" he used to work for Red Rose tea.

Ferm? ta bouche!

"Ferme la bouche"  was a phrase I heard lots in my high school French classes. Seemed we  students talked a lot in class and I doubt it was in French.

I heard it a lot at the dinner table.  "Ferme ta bouche quand tu manges".  Now I find myself using it on my son.

Sounds familiar.  I never used the variations on my kids but I found my daughter doing it to her kids, but then she took French in school.

About the only French I hear around here is typically followed by "pardon my French". ;D
