I have seen a number of folks in this thread say they are illegal.

NOW: I keep a copy of the Michigan Vehicle Code on my hard drive.  I searched first on KNOB (no hits found) and then on STEERING (several hits none of them apply to this thread)

This leads me to believe that for non-commercial vehicles (I did not search the motor carrier laws as I do not have a copy) they are NOT illegal IN MICHIGAN.

Has anyone posted an actual law?

IF you can post an actual law.. I'd be interested.

John, an RCW (Revised Code of Washington) IS the law. The post I made, with the location on the official website and the actual text is an actual law. You can not have anything that might catch on clothing, shirt sleeves certainly could catch. as another poster already stated.

John, did you read my earlier post? I posted a reference to every state - and according to that link, there are no laws specifically against a steering wheel knob in any state.

My Post was intended for those who claim they are illegal.. Since you claim there is no law against them.. We are on the same page.

I might add. I was also talking about a lot of other "Laws" that do not exist. Some of which have been very widely believed.

For example: For many years it was believed by many that it was illegal to drive barefoot.. Since you can better sense the pedal pressure barefoot. Mobile had special soleless shoes made (or half soleed) so the drivers in the Mobile Economy run could drive like they were barefoot but still appear to be shod.

again, I've yet to find a law requiring shoes.

I have one in my RV and one in my pickup. I've considered putting one in my Lincoln. I look at using them the same way I do about speeding. Occasionally I get caught and just pay the fine. There are many tradeoffs in life. More often than not though I wiggle my way out of it. I never have been stopped with knob though.

Ah, but big brother is watching.  We just got a new Jeep and in the literature that came with it is a short description of a device in the car that records the last 30 seconds of your travel,  speed is one of the items mentioned.  I was told today that the MHP will access that information in case of an accident or other significant event.  There is already one local MHP officer that has the device to read it.

Also the big insurance companies, I know of Allstate and State Farm, are  pushing to have you put a device on your car that records your driving, speed vs speed limit for example.  The carrot is a discount in the insurance if you are a good boy.

Those "Black Box" recorders have been around since last century.. However back then they did not tell you it was in the car.. I escorted an Insurance Investigator or two back to a smashed car so he could download the box when I worked as a tow truck dispatcher after I retired from the State Police dispatch.

Frankly.. I am not bothered by 'em.  More likely to clear me than hang me.. But I can see where others... Might be well and truly hung by 'em.

Do we want laws to be specific? All the cell phone while driving laws were/are unneeded. We have laws about driving distracted already, texting while driving is certainly a distraction. We waste our time making laws for stupid common sense things, instead of just using the broad law that already exists. It covers everything from trying to smack a misbehaving kid in the back seat to changing tracks on your newfangled 8 track tape player. You probably won't find law specifically banning spinners, but the "catching your sleeve" or whacking your hand clear while trying to recover a skid are the reasons I've been cited when asking state inspection guys. I always had one on my boat. Tried 'em on my car when I was a kid learning how to drive like the Dukes of Hazard in Columbia County, NY, a few decades ago. I didn't like it while going sideways. It was more likely to hurt you than help you maintain control.

I can see it now.
Officer: what happened?
Spinner driver: I don't know, the spinner caught my sleeve.... or something knocked my wrist, I think it's broken.
If you mention a spinner knob or they see it you'll be at fault for an unsafe modification/accessory.

i think really that should be all you need to hear    theres no batter  way to say it
and again i feel it comes down to the cop the pulls you over

if you have one hand and need it to help drive i am sure he would not say a thing
over that    off road only is what i was told years ago

If your steering wheel is that hard to turn, then your steering needs to be inspected and repaired. I can turn my steering wheel with one finger. The issue many of us who used to use them, if one of your steering wheels hits something hard it can cause the steering wheel to spin and that big knob will spin around and hit what ever is in its path. Had my share of bruises and seen others with worse injuries. That's one of the reasons they were outlawed.

Those were called "suicide knobs" years ago.

Also "Brody Knobs."

(BTW: There is an exception in some states where they are otherwise illegal:  The ones with the Hula girl in the grass skirt embedded in the clear plastic knob are OK  ;)

Yes -- I would, for most part. I would rather have a law specific vs. up to the interpretation of a cop or judge.

And also, how often do you suppose someone is pulled over with a broken wrist from a steering wheel knob?

???

Here's a site that professes to know the law about Brody Knobs, state by state, with references.  Can't vouch for accuracy, as there seems to be some variation of opinions.
