My RV is wired for 50 amp, our seasonal camp site only have 30 amp connections.  My question is do I get a 30 amp surge protector and connect directly to the electrical box, or do I i get a 50 amp and use an adapter to connect to the box?

With surge protectors there are two options
Go with the size of the RV's power cord (50 amps in this case)
or Go with 50 amps in the anticipation of upgrading your "House" some day.

In either case the result is the same, 50.

Get the 50 amp, because if you get the 30 amp and ever connect to a 50 amp you cannot use the unit.  The 50 amp can be used on either.
