I am really hoping to have enough knowledge to lend more answers than questions soon...until then:

Any tips on the feasibility and best way to go about towing a 2009 Mini Cooper Clubman JCW? I know this generation Mini seems to be a fairly common TOAD, but I haven't seen much about towing a Clubman (longer wheelbase) and definitely not the JCW (John Cooper Works performance model). The weight is listed at 2,768-2,888 lbs, depending on who you ask. My Class-C is rated up to 3,500 lbs of towing with a 250 lb tongue weight.

I am thinking I would prefer to tow with a dolly (correct me if I am wrong) as it would incorporate brakes on the dolly and keep the front (driven) wheels off the ground. The main drawback I can see is if it raises the front of the car too much, rear fascia and exhaust might get might close too the ground. Also, I'm not sure if I would need a dolly with articulating wheels?

It seems the tow bar and braking system are a cheaper investment up front, but I worry about the long term wear and tear on the car.

We are planning our first big trip for the end of the summer and with two small kids, being on the road for two weeks means it might be nice to have the ability to explore outside of the parks/campgrounds.

I don't know if you've seen this:

It seems that a dolly is your best option for that particular model of Mini.

According to Remco    http://www.remcotowing.com/Towing/Store.php
The automatic must be dolly towed, the manual can be towed 4 down.
