Has anyone taken this road into Moab?  Is it full of switch backs and long steep grades?  Tough on RV's? Nice Scenery?  Thinking of taking it from Farmington to Moab.

Thanks

Randy,

I'm having a tough time finding that trail on a map. Does it run all the way from Farmington to Moab?

Do you have the highway numbers?

We in our motorhome and Toad and our son with his 35' fifth wheel took this route last June.  Pretty easy drive with no problems.

"Trail of the Ancients" is actually a scenic/historic loop that runs through the 4 Corners area. The part you're looking at, Hwy 491 (formerly Hwy 666, which is what locals still call it), is an easy road. We run from Cortez to Farmington all the time (in fact, we're in Farmington right now) and we go from Cortez to Moab several times a year. Go west out of Farmington to Shiprock and then north on Hwy 491. This is all farily flat. The road is ok but look out for bumps and dips (it's in desperate need of realigning and resurfacing). Hwy 491 from Cortez to Monticello Utah is easy. You'll change elevation but nothing dramatic. From Monticello to Utah, Hwy 191 has a big downhill right outside of Monticello then you'll hit ups and downs in the canyon country. Hardest part of the trip from Monticello to Moab is keeping your eyes on the road and not on the scenery. Last time we were up that way, about 8 months ago, they were working on widening the roads. I hope they're finished by now but don't really know.

We'll be going back to Cortez tomorrow. Then up to Moab on Friday. Honk if you pass us by !!

Thanks so much Wendy for information.

Where are you staying while in Farmington?  We are at MOM & POPs RV Park, they are paved sites with gravel.  Very quite and close to everything, only $20.00 a night.  He also does 3 nights and 4th is free ($60.00 not bad).  Laundry is down the road but that is fine with us.

Hi Liz and Randy,

We stayed in Fruitland Sunday night by the old Fruitland Trading Post and in the Farmington Sam's Club parking lot Monday night. Had a couple of jobs to do and didn't feel like staying in an RV park....also too cheap :) More often than not, if we're in Farmington overnight, we stay in the Sam's Club parking lot.

BYW, the highway between Shiprock and Cortez was pretty dippy and grooved when we came home this evening. Nothing you'd notice in a car or truck but not so much fun in an RV.

Thanks Wendy

Looking to see you at Moab.  Don't know our site #, Guess we will be surprised.
