I have just bought a 2015 Silverado, It's towing capacity is 11,000#.  The GCWR is 16,900# (I think).  Where can I find the actual information (using my VIN)?  I want to know if I can tow a small 5th wheel.  The box is only 5' 6".  Thanks, Beau

Your owner's manual should give you a lot of the info, usually general info by model,  but your payload capacities will be listed on a yellow/white sticker in the driver's side door pillar. THAT number is for YOUR specific vehicle as it came off the assembly line. It will include any FACTORY installed options, but NOT any installed by the dealer or someone else.

with a 5'6' box the short answer is NO you need to look on the drivers door B pillar between the driver and passengers door yellow tag look like the attachment  the 1500 is not rated for a 5th wheel with a 5'6" box max cargo weight will be about 1600 lbs take the hitch and 2 people your at about 600lbs but the issue is clearance with such a short box you will need a slider or an extended pin box like a sidewinder. most 5ers dont have a pin under 1000lbs loaded

I looked on the sticker on the door pillar.  It says that the truck can handle a 2,000# load, but I'm not sure of the rear axle weight rating.  I'll look again, thanks, Beau

My wifes previous '06 1500 crew cab 4x4 with the 5' 10" bed  and her new '16 1500 4x4 crew cab also with the 5' 10" bed has a not recommended for a GN or 5th wheel trailer.
I inquired with chevy chassis engineering department folks as to the why's.
They said it was because GM felt the bed length was too short for these type of trailers. It had nothing to do with the trucks load or towing ability.

I installed a bed plate in both trucks for my GN trailers. Her new '16 5.3 3.42 gears 6L80E tranny is hands down twice the truck above her old '06 5.3 4L60E 3.73 truck.

Sound like your '15 may have the NHT package which raises GVWR and RAWR.

I would look at 5ers with a 900-1100 lb dry pin weight.
Check out these folks with lite weight 5th wheel trailers.........http://www.allencampermfg.com/Up-to-27--5th-Wheel.html

Stay under the trucks GAWRs/P tires/wheel numbers.

when GM does not post the spec nor do they suggest/recommend it - its usually for good reason - there are NO SPECS for a 1500 Gooseneck / 5th wheel on Gms website

equipped with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer hitch.

a dry pin weight of 1000lbs can easily turn into a loaded weight of 1500 lbs

2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 Towing and Hauling
Engine Max Towing Capacity Max Payload
4.3L EcoTec V6 5,600 lbs 1,800 lbs
5.3L EcoTec V8 11,200 lbs 1,800 lbs
6.2L EcoTec V8 12,000 lbs 1,780 lbs

There are probably some 5W's that can be towed with a short bed, half ton truck, but not many.  The problem with the 5'10" bed is that the trailer has a excellent chance of striking the cab in a tight turn, so GM doesn't want to tell you its OK to do. Doesn't mean it can't be done, but for the typical owner its just not a good idea. A slider type hitch, with a trailer designed with a short, tapered nose, can work. Whether there is one of those in a style you like is another question.

thanks for all the replies.  I hope to follow that link to GM and check the specs using my VIN.  I'll probably stay with a trailer.  Beau

Go here and find your truck with the correct engine, transmission and rear end ratios.

I wouldn't attempt a 5th-wheel with a 1500 . . .

The issue is not so much what can it pull . . . but what can it stop!

I have a 2015 Chevy 2500HD Double Cab with the short box, 6.0L Vortec gas engine and the 4.10 rear end and a Reese 16K Pro Slider hitch and pull a 34-foot 5th-wheeler that weighs in just under 10,000 pounds.

It pulls and stops fine . . .

No way would I even try a 1500, no matter what engine or rear end.

No way the truck can pull a FW!!!

First, the short box is a HUGE issue.  Not near enough clearance between the cab and FW.

Second, not near enough cargo capacity.

True story:  I recently was visiting a friend with a new 1500 reg cab LB.  I commented nice truck, but it can't pull a FW.  He said, "Oh yes. Local dealer has a 7000# FW in stock right now."  I added, OK, 7000# dry, so at least 8000# ready to camp, so 1600# pin wt (20%).  Now add 200# for the FW hitch.  1800#.  I then opened the door, looked at the yellow sticker (1889#), and added, "as soon as you get in the truck, you are overweight."

Granted, your CCC is 2000#, but if you and wife together, plus her purse weigh over 200#, you are overweight with a 7000# dry wt. FW.
