Or ads by "Bettersurf"

I ran "MalwareBytes" and cleaned up a suggested stuff..but still these ads are popping up

Any suggestions??
George

What "home site"? FWIW there are no popup ads on this forum.

Tom,
When on this site I am bombarded (sp) by ads from "BetterSurf"
If I knew how to send you what I see than I would help.
I am in Chrome too.
I haven't noticed it happening on other sites...least to this extent..
I am "hot-spotting" thru my Droid X2 on Verizon..

George

I just checked other sites like Facebook, Yahoo.and no ads from "BetterSurf"

Is it me?? Bad Karma??

It's not happening to me using Windows Internet Explorer.  And Tom, rest assured, I don't ever see popup ads here.

And when I go tothr "HELP" button it pend a page which if I click on it my malware blocks.. it is flodded w/ads from "BetterSurf"  tons of ads.. some flashing like a boardwalk sign..clicking on any highlighted causes the malware to block it.
So far thisisonly happening on this site..
I can maneuver thru it to see other postings... but...it is a PITA.

George

George, there are no popup ads associated with our Help page.

I got caught up in this also, just last week.  Tom, you might recall my PM to you about something similar to this.  What it turned out to be was a "search assist" app that had grabbed control of my browsers, IE, Chrome and Firefox by changing the default search engine and by adding a search accelerator.  It would frequently show certain words as links which were basically ads.  I think the main culprit was "Conduit.A" or some such.  Malwarebytes cleaned up some, but it kept sneaking back in.  I finally just backed up to an earlier system restore point and that got rid of it.

Tom I belive you...but my 'puter doesn't..
Just now when I opened the tab, after visiting my FB account, and verious other sites a porno site tried to open in a new tab...
This is the only sitethis is happening to and it has just tonight started ...
I have 4 other windows open w/o any problems..allin Chrome.

What am I doing wrong and how do I go right??

George

Thanks for the tip Molaker..
this keyboard on a 13" is killing me... sigh
I'll try a restore.

Even after doing that, you may still need to remove the search accelerator manually.

A google search will tell you that this is malware from some software you've downloaded from another site, and the malware is hijacking your browser. The various search results explain how/where you likely got it and how the hijacking affects whatever page you've set as your 'Home' page in your browser. Tom (Molaker)'s explanation of it going away when he reverted to a prior restore point confirms the malware was on his computer, not our forum.

Thanks for the explanation of how to remove it Tom.

My back-up is now my main and only operational computer.
My other has gotten infested,,, suspect an open WiFi ...
For some reason, not known yet, there are no restore dates in a seldom used 3 year old spare computer.. and functional security programs too of any kind are missing..Icons are on the screen...programs are not listed..
They were there..poof they are gone...
I suspect this is beyond me ...gonna need a doctor with the right JUJU..
This computer has a missing "N" key [ something to do with swatting at a fly ]  sigh... an irritation I'll have to live with for a while..

And Tom... I believed you all along..and thank you for your fast response..just hope my sick "child" didn't cause any issues there..

George

No problem George, and thanks for the follow-up. However, I have to smile every time someone has a computer or software issue and says "it only happens on this forum"  ;D

Actually the issues only did show up there...maybe because of the type of sites I had open...
This is a W-8 and is better protected...no more open WiFi for a while...

George

George, your prior messages mentioned 'Home page', and the google searches on that issue explained how the malware hijacks your browser when you click on your Home page. It sounded to me that you had this forum set as the Home page in your browser, and that would explain why "it only happened here". If you had WalMart set as your Home page, then it would happen every time you visited the WalMart web site.

After years of procrastination I am now regularly backing up my computers just because I'm tired of dealing with the results of crashes or malware as reported by the OP.  For those using Windows 8/8.1 there's a new feature that makes backing up user files (the files I really care about) completely painless.  If you have access to an external hard drive or server on your network, the File History feature will automatically backup all user files to whatever drive you specify.  It's an ongoing, real-time process so every time you make changes to a file they are made in the backup shortly thereafter.  It even syncs with the Sky Drive feature so as not to duplicate any files you are storing in the cloud.

Not sure I would want to use this feature (File History).  In my days of web and application development, going back and finding an earlier version of a file I had been working on saved my butt more than once.  Perhaps now that I seldom have any files that get modified over time, it would work okay.  More common "old school" backup applications are designed to backup any changed files with a modified name or folder so one can go back to nearly any level of modification and still not back up files again that had not changed.

From what I can tell, it appears that File History does exactly what Tom is describing.  Every time a file is changed a new backup is created with a time and date stamp and the previous version remains intact.  I'm not sure yet if the action that creates the new version is the saving process or if it is done at time intervals, or what.  But it does appear that you will build up a file history of earlier versions just like Tom recalls doing manually.

Now that makes more sense.
