charging problems with 99 winne

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an RV or an interest in RVing!
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Well, thats good actually. It looks like a previous owner had done the usual hack electrical work which will not help you in the future. the two white cylindrical inline fuse holders and the newer inline blade type fuse holders, EDIT: and a black cylindrical fuse holder too, the blue 3M scotchlock splice and below it the red wire splice with the electriclal tape wrapped around the wires, are all owner added items. No telling for what.

I highly suggest you download all of the wiring diagrams for your model

Which are these pdfs. Bring each one up on your computer and then download them, by clicking the down arrow in the upper right of the screen right next to the printer symbol. then save to a folder and eventually move to a thumb drive to carry with you.

I was not aware of the schematics that Winnebago has, which are far superior to what most manufacturers provide. Do you mind sharing how to find those?
Actually this entire thread belongs in the Winnebago Topics forum on this board. John Canfield has the information there as a sticky, but I'll repeat it here in a different manner that might be easier for people to find without the links at hand.

Go to winnebago.com
Then in the very top menu bar on the right, click OWNERS
A drop down box appears, click the first item which is OWNER RESOURCES
Another drop down box will appear titled HELPFUL LINKS
From this menu you have many items but you are mostly interested in..........
Guides and Diagrams has several red buttons down the page,
Paint Guides
Sealant Guides
Plumbing Diagrams
Wiring Diagrams

In wiring you will get a list of years and you drill down thru them to get to what you need. Below the list of years you will see three lists and guides which will also be helpful in understanding the drawings. For later models the parts lookup requires a 3D viewer to be installed on your computer.

Some models have individual wiring diagram subjects as I linked to above, but then will have a link at the bottom which is the entire collection of all of the drawings. Some models such as the '99 Adventure 33V above, do not have this single link, which saves a bunch of time.

Here is a catalog of standard Winnebago parts, which is also helpful. 2008 edition, seems to be the "current" one on the WBO website.

The fact the 40 amp breaker is not tripped is not an indication it is OK. I would at least check the voltage on both terminals of the breaker with the batteries turned on. All of the power from the batteries to your 12v breakers inside (above the fridge I think) come thru this breaker and all the power from the converter to the batteries passes thru here. The breaker could have easily failed internally. You could easily have a loose screw on a terminal somewhere, they need to be checked every couple of years, as an RV shakes everything loose.

If you find it bad, I would consider replacing it with something better. These breakers are used in General Aviation aircraft such as Cessnas due to their small size and light weight, and nothing to do with how long they last. In lower amperages they are fine but I recall having lots of trouble with the 60 amp version used for the alternator output in Cessna 150's and 172's and the like. So much trouble that Cessna finally came out with a kit to install a much larger breaker. They are fine for low amperage's but this high is too much.

You would have to mount the breaker differently and install larger terminal ends on the wires. I am not keen on upsizing to 50 amp, but this is 8 gauge wire, and fully capable of that, especially since it won't have that much passing thru it very often.

As an alternative Tyco manufactures a line of breakers used in aircraft that are a pull to open type and also trip on overload, similar in size and shape to what you have, and pretty decent quality. Next to the bottom one in the list. Other, better brands such as Klixon, used in airliners and larger aircraft are expensive and I could not find one in 40 amp oddly.
