Paint is paint, right? You aren't working directly on the fender material.

Yes it's the painted part. Thanks, just want to be sure as this is my first attempt at the clay bar

Clay bar just taked the stuck on crud off the paint. It does not effect the paint inself. Just be sure to use lots of water. A couple drops of liquid dish soap in a squirt bottle filled with water to keep the area your working on really wet. Do a small area and rinse thoroughly before moving to another area. Also be sure to turn, fold the bar often to present a clean area.
