Fixing San Francisco's EV problem

Yeah, usually right where the speed drops. Like from 55 to 35 and coasting starting at the "reduced speed ahead" sign won't shave off enough speed. They LOVE that stuff.
Even coming into Reno from the east there is often a cop hiding. Speed limit, coming from the east on I-80, is 80, 75, 70 and 65MPH as you get closer to Reno.

IMO, NV has reasonable speed limits. Be especially careful where the speed limits seem unreasonably slow. An example is the southern part of USA Parkway. A reasonable speed limit seems like it would be at least 70 MPH there. It is 30 MPH. When the wild horse jumps in front of your car (or motorcycle) you will then know why. Hundreds of wild horses in that area and they don't seem to understand the danger from cars at all!

In 2014 the police force in Waldo Florida was shutdown because of an illegal ticket quota. I've been in the town a couple of times prior to the shutdown to attend the flea market there. There was a huge billboard just out of town warning of the speed trap. Even so there were two cop cars ticketing drivers as fast as they could.
Here's a link to a story:
Florida town infamous for speed traps disbanding police force

Searchlight, NV is midway between Las Vegas and Laughlin. It has a population of 440 people and was the birthplace and home town of former US Senator Harry Reid who had a house there and until the last years of his life could often be seen dining at the local restaurant when he wasn't in Washington.

US 95 is a mostly flat and straight 4 lane divided road with a 75 MPH speed limit for the 60 miles between US 93 (I-11) outside Boulder City and the NV 163 turnoff to Laughlin. It's a popular route for people going to and from the Laughlin hotels and casinos. The speed limit drops from 75 MPH to 25 MPH for about a mile through the town itself and they have lots of cops making sure you don't go through any faster. Same 4 lane road, no stoplights. Following complaints from the Laughlin casino owners Searchlight added 55, 45, 35, 25 MPH speed zones on the highway as it approaches the town, spaced close enough so you can't just coast down to each new speed limit, you have to actively apply the brakes. And they make sure you slow down to those speeds before you pass each sign.

I wish if the speed limit is 60 mph, then we keep going 60mph.

I don't want to have to slow down every few miles for congestion.

If it's within spec of the radar gun, why not?

BTW, I know back when I worked in San Francisco, any speeding ticket at 5 MPH or less over any speed limit would be excused automatically when you went to the Hall of Justice to say you wanted to take it to court. SF cops would often issue such tickets as a warning of sorts. Such as if they were really 7 MPH over and you don't give the cop a lot of BS.

Because speedometers on vehicles can legitimately be off by several miles per hour. Your average driver doesn't have their speed-o calibrated after they purchase the vehicle, while LE units are usually calibrated every couple of years.

NYT article this morning says Tesla overnight sent "Dear Employee" letters to all 500 of its fast charger construction team. Musk says they'll complete the chargers they're currently working on but then shift focus to self driving tech and AI. Rumor is Tesla is backing away from it's universal charging station commitments with other brands.

I hear the connector will switch the NACS standard on perhaps all vehicles, but perhaps not many of the Tesla Superchargers will be compatible even with a connector that fits.

Also, many of the vehicles won't be compatible with Tesla Supercharging. The Tesla Supercharging is not anything like CCS unless its converted. That is why their V1 and V2 Tesla Superchargers (all of them that are less than 250 KW) cannot be made to work for CCS.

CCS is the fast-charging standard for all USA EVs except for Tesla.

The cars also have to run a program to be compatible with V3 & V4 Tesla Supercharging.

If Tesla does not switch to being compatible for CCS cars, it could complicate things even more when the connectors fit but no charge possible. And can get even more complicated on older cars that have the correct fitting adapter that still will not work. And for two reasons. Changes needed at both, the Supercharger as well as in the non-Tesla.

The few Tesla chargers that have Magic Dock solve this problem, but it looks like Tesla totally gave up on that idea. Only three of them in the entire state of CA and they are all at unneeded locations, next to real CCS. Zero Magic Docks in the entire state of Nevada.

But Magic Dock is only for the J-1772 connectors which will slowly be phased out with the new NACS as standard. This is perhaps why Tesla has kinda give up on this idea.

I really don't think there are yet any firm plans for Tesla Supercharging on all non-Tesla vehicles. So it looks like it will be a while before we have a real fast charging standard for all.

^^^ Or the Federal Gov't could step in and read them all the riot act, like the European Union did with Apple over the charging port issue, either you adopt the c charger port like everyone else or you don't sell Apple products in Europe, end of story.

Yep, sometimes it is necessary for government to get involved to make a standard for all to follow. Or else there are too many different ideas that few can agree on.

It seems to me that even Tesla cannot agree with themselves where to go with their idea of charging non-Teslas. And because of that, they are very slow to do anything at all.

And now that they are laying off many employees who only work on Superchargers, I wouldn't expect any changes to come very fast to the non-Teslas.

This reminds me of the APPLE / Android phones.. The charging cables (up till the lastest) not compatible. Finally overseas they said USB-C ONLY and now we are starting to see I(ncompatable) phones which are USB-C

Did Apple change their cables? My Android has a USB-C cable, but my wife's Apple has one of those proprietary Apple ones that doesn't fit anything else.

IMAO, it was stupid to make the "C" cable look so much like the old mini-USB.

I wonder how many have jammed in the wrong cable because of that.

Apple devices sold in the European Union must be USB-C compatible, not sure if they'll drop their proprietary lightning chargers here.

Yes at least overseas Apple has changed I do not know if they have changed in the USA because the I in I-phone means Incompatable to me plus I'm opposed to some of apple corporate policies.

It was many years ago, but in Canada, I purchased a cheap pay in advance cell phone because my USA PAYG cell phone wouldn't work up there.

I made sure I got one that could use a standard USB. I discovered the USB connectors were the same as standard, but the wiring was different. I could only charge up with the stuff that came with it. A standard cable fit fine but did nothing. No connection to the phone. Different wiring even for the charge.

I see this same type of thing coming to non-Tesla EVs the way Tesla is now going. Sounds like Tesla wants to get out from the non-Tesla charging business, not long after it ALMOST kinda started. No useful locations where they have Magic Dock, AFAIK. No need for a non-Tesla to charge on such. However, I did once as an experiment on my Energica Motorcycle. It charged fine, but at a slower rate than normal CCS:

Sometimes, but not always.

But sometimes the scariest words are "I am from the government, and I am here to help."

Yeah, there are two other sayings that go along with that. One is, "The check is in the mail." Do not post the other. :sneaky:
