What they don't tell you is he was given SSH access to the machine.  Once you give someone that kind of access, it's not too difficult to get malicious.
 
Subsequently, ther was a Hacker Challenge posted by the University of Wisconsin that had a Mac Mini properly configured. It resisted all attacks for the 38 hrs it was allowed to be on the internet. T UW IT department then forced them to stop due the the humongous bandwidth of the attackers!
