Kev, when I retired more than 10 years ago, I walked away from a plumb job.  A six figure salary plus a bonus of as much as 50%.  On top of that I received stock grants and options.  I took my pension at 61 and never looked back.  Four years later I convinced Maria to quit her job.  As you know, she's a tad shy of retirement. ;)  Since 2009 we've clocked maybe 65,000 miles in our trailer and motorhome.  Had I continued working another 4 years for my new boss I quite possibly would have been one of the richer men six feet under

Kevin,

101is definitely doable from LA all the way to Astoria(except maybe through SF). Certainly the portions through LA and SF and not much fun - actually I would bypass SF using I-680. Further north in CA there are sections that are narrow and twisty. In Oregon some sections north of Florence are narrow and hilly as the road follows the coast. I've driven it all (except through SF) and would not hesitate to do it again - just not quickly!
