This will be sad news for a lot of people.  The 350-site KOA campground at Circus Circus in Las Vegas will close Sept. 29, 2014 to make way for the Rock in Rio USA festival site.  It has been a popular campground for 35 years because it is so close to many Strip attractions.

MGM Resorts International and Cirque plan to transform 33 acres of real estate on the southwest corner of Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard into a permanent City of Rock open-air concert venue.  The first Las Vegas Rock in Rio festival will be in May 2015.  It is expected to host 300,000 people over two weekends in May with a daily capacity of 80,000 people viewing five stages.  The 33-acre site includes what is now the KOA campground.

The official KOA site says "KOA is moving! The campground at Circus Circus is closing and a new KOA Las Vegas location will be announced in the coming days."  Stay tuned.

The only thing it has going for it is location. Be interesting to see what location the pick for a new KOA ......

Last time I was in Las Vegas I was able to get a very nice room in the tower overlooking the Circus Circus KOA for about half of what it would have cost to stay there in my RV.

I have to admit of all the KOA's I stayed at.. that is the only one where I did not feel somewhat overcharged.  It is not just close to the strip.. It is ON the strip  I mean it shares a driveway with the Circus-Circus employee parking and from there there is a skyway to the casino..

My first time in Vegas, that's were we stayed.. Then we found alternative parking for the next 3 visits.

Of course, the rumor back then (2006/7) was C-C was closing and the KOA with it.

Question: Is Oasis still in business?  They are at the south end of the strip.. Not nearly as close to what's happening. but, They are a Harraha's Property as I recall and run a shuttle to all the other Harraha's properties,, This includes much of the strip.

I recall years ago a couple of co-workers wished to go to Vegas, they had been before but when they called the hotel on the outskirts of town they USUALLY stayed at.. no room, No room, No room at the inn was the song reservations sang to them..... I told one of them "Give me a few mintues"... Found them a better room (I think it was at C-C in fact) on the stip, now the minimum stay was 3 nights but the cost for 3 was the same as 2 in the other place... Plus,, You wanted to visit the casinos from the other place you got into your furnace of a rental car and turned the A/C up to HIGH, burned a couple gallons of gas each way and fought traffic.. V/S' you got in the elevator and pressed "CANINO" and there you were.

Yes, John, the Oasis is still operating.  Back before the '08 recession they were going to close and condos would be built in that location.  When the economy tanked that plan was dropped.  I think they may have changed hands since then, but not sure.  In any case, when they upgraded the I-15/Windmill interchange they also upgraded the entrance into the Oasis.  It is on Windmill now instead of a long access road out to Las Vegas Blvd.  Also, it is now gated so we haven't been inside the Oasis for a while.  They still have a shuttle but I don't know where it goes.

When I was there that was just about the nicest campground around (At least the pull through sites)  Some folks did not like the nose to tail sites but, Well, it all depends on how much you want to pay.  As i recall the pull throughs were the same price as back in at the KOA.

Today, if I go back I have a membership over on Bolder I'll use, but .. Well, that one is nice cause the bus stops right at the end of the driveway, making it "NO-Towed needed" if you do not wish to drive.

New location was announced today (9/29).  KOA will open at Sam's Town on 10/1/2014.

Sam's Town was a nice reasonably priced place to stay. But with KOA I sure the rates will go up and up with no discounts for slow periods.
I guess next time I'll go back to Arizona Charlies.

Boy, that was fast!  I really didn't expect them to find a new location this soon.

KOAs are getting expensive. On a cross country trip ... we're heading home now ... the average per night stay is $42.

I agree KOA is becoming the most expensive average CG in the country.  I signed up again this year as we had no itinerary on our trip so if I needed them I had the discount.  We also have points I didn't want to expire. They give a free day in September that would turn out to be the only other we went to a KOA. Stopped once in Rawlings, WY. Anyway,  I go to sign up for the NorthHampton, MA KOA and they aren't on my list of approved sites where the free day applies,  go figure. Last renewal for me.

Found out what they are doign... Moving across town.. Sam's Town RV campground is now KOA. (Or very soon will be) they just bought up a different parking lot.

Won't be as good as C-C was though.. I mean it was a short walk to "People conveyor) to CC and then out the other door to the strip, Sam's is on Bolder, not LV-Bvld.

It has already moved from Circus Circus out to the Boulder Highway and is now called the "Las Vegas KOA at Sam's Town".  I'm amazed at how quickly the transition took place.  It obviously must have been in the works for some time.

I am sorry its moved, but oh well, just will have to drive more to go places.  I don't like parking around Vegas.

While I too think that most KOA's are over priced, I believe that it is due to the "children friendly accommodations" that they try to provide. Since we don't travel with children, we don't get the value out of it.
