Ok, I am tired, sick, crabby, and late...

Who has the definitive route from Flagstaff into the resort tomorrow so Christi and I don't kill each other and we don't run our long selves off into the underbrush before I get the Jeep dirty. We don't need any skill tests.

Kim:
I know you probably don't want to hear this, but the easiest derive is to take the long way around.  That is I-40 to US 93 into Vegas to I-15 North.  It's 590 miles from Gallup, but the other way is a much more difficult drive IMHO. The other way is 420 miles I-40 to US 89 but it's your call.  No fighting!  Be happy, you're on vacation.  Oh that's right, you live on vacation!  8)

Just realized, I could be wrong.  I just assumed you were staying in a CG on the west side of the park.  If you are staying on the east side of Zion then ignore everything I said and realize that I am a dumbs***.

Happy travels,

Steve

We took the route through Page and then to Kanab, then took a left to Fredonia, right on 389 to Hurricane. The rest is easy. I would have taken the shorter route but I wasn't sure about the tunnel in the park. We are in site 24. Actually Page is only 211miles from Flagstaff and another 130 miles to Virgin. That 341 miles and very doable.

I would follow Henry's route. Vegas is longer and maybe easier except I-15 in northern AZ where it follows the river through the canyon is under construction (re-construction of bridges). One lane both ways. We came through Las Vegas only because we wanted to stop in Vegas.

OOPS, I forgot about the detour on 89 into Page. Haven't driven that and I don't know how much mileage that adds.

Henry. how was the detour?

We took Alt 89 over the mountain to Fredonia and bypassed Page altogether.  No shoulder on the highway, but it wasn't terible.  6% grade going up and coming down the mountain to Fredonia.  No bad switchbacks.  Beautiful drive along the Vermillion Cliffs.  But, if you don't like no shoulder highways this route isn't for you.

The detour is a new hi way . Actually I think it is shorter that the old route. Kim, if you drive it take the right at The Gap and follow the signs. I think it was called 89t. My gps was trying to take us to where the bridge is out.

Looking at the AZDOT website it looks like the new detour (the original detour was 45 miles longer on existing roads) is about the same distance at the old 89. AZDOT made a deal with the Indian Tribal council and road dept to use Indian Rt 20 as the detour. This was a mostly dirt road so AZDOT ungraded the road bed and paved it all in 3 mos to get a good detour open. 35mil in federal emergency highway funds paid for the project. The road will be returned to the Indian Res when the main road repairs are completed in a few years. It wasn't a bridge that when out, but rather the entire road caved away. Looks like a 40 million dollar project to shore up the road bed and rebuild the road. Starts this summer.

BTW, we'll be in at the Virgin River RV Park tomorrow, probably early afternoon.

I did not make it clear that we had not made Flagstaff, but only Gallup.

We are going to head into Page today and then pull Zion Saturday morning. We have had some real issues losing three of our travel days to the doctor, so I don't think it is in our best interest to explode into Zion with nothing left in the tank.

Thanks for all the routing info and it gives me a better picture.

Leave the light on....

Glad to see people are rolling in and kicking of the rallies.

Kim, hope you get feeling better.  It sucks bad enough to not feel good when you have to be at work but really sucks when you aren't feeling well on vacation.

Oh wait, sorry I mentioned that 4-letter word that most of you don't like any more.  Well some of us still have to. :'(

Mike.

We Are on the way to Zion just now. Spent some time with Betty, Terry, Mimi, Chris, Jeff, Sue, Ardra, Jerry, Sheila and Ken in Las Vegas. Boy we have great time yesterday seeing Donny and Marie show in Flamingo Casino. I really don't know what Sheila was taking that night but her lough was contagious. I hope that she will share her medication with me next time.

We have arrived at Zion site 32, where is everybody???  Small glitch with the power but they immediatley changed the breaker and the outlet.  Ken is off talking to them about the use of their party room.  Let the fun begin...

First meeting today at 4:00 in the Social Hall. Behind the office, next to the pool. Site 24. Bring your chair and a beverage.

The park is serving burger and chips tonight. Some of us are making that dinner - $5 a head.  Pre-pay at the office

Earlier today, we notified the Zion River staff we would be a day late because of health issues, but wanted them to know we were prepared to meet our reservation obligation, and expected to be charged for the late notice.

Lo and behold, I received an email confirming my new arrival date, tomorrow, I was not charged for missing my arrival date, and everyone is happy!

I already like this place for that level of customer service - that's not all that common anymore.

See ya in the morning!

There is an empty space beside us a we hope it is yours. Site 27.  Can't wait for your arrival. We plan to hit the visitor center tomorrow and ride shuttle. We will get all the info on hikes and things to do in the park.

Terry Wants to see about hiking the narrows but I want to find out how deep and cold the water will be before I commit.

Sorry we missed the planning for tomorrow.  Think we finally have everything working now.  Did you set a time to leave for the park and who is driving with whom?

Betty, I suspect the water will be very cold.  I think the river originates up where the white stuff falls.

We're in site 31, next to Kuchs.

ArdraF

We need to go to Mesquite and get a geocache from NV.  Figured this would ne the best morning to do that so we are heading there this morning.  Should be back by noon or 1:00.  When we hiked the narrows 20 some odd years ago, the water was very cold.  Surely, it has warmed up some by now! LOL

MICRO RALLY!! We're at the American RV park and last night Tara recognized Marianne and Don's MH. She stopped and they gossiped for a while and then came to our place for a few minutes (Marianne was starving Don and he said food was in order -about 8:00 pm).  No pics, not even drinks, so Micro Rally;D

Now we're wishing we'd planned on this rally instead of the FMCA 4 Wheelers at Moab :( Oh the Trials of this life :D

Ernie

PS Tara's Mavs won so it was an all around good night ;D ;D
