New Mexico vacation

My wife and I are planning to take Sept 2 - Sept 16 off for vacation this year. We would like to see some of New Mexico. Discounting the drive time from Portland, we could spend about seven days exploring. That's not much but we could still have a good time.

In my mind , a must see for me would be Carlsbad Caverns, so that would put us down in the SE part of the stare I think for say three days. What else would we find around there that you'd recommend. The other 4 days we could possible spend in the NW part of the state on our way back to Portland through UT. Whats good to see there?

I made a rushed trip through NM with dd and her family.  We were 2 hours behind schedule when we got to the Alien Museum in Roswell.  When we left the museum we were an hour and a half ahead of schedule.  Don't waste your time there! 

Even though there's not much there, you might not want to miss the opportunity of standing in 4 states at once at Four Corners.

New Mexico is a wonderful state from all directions. We RV's two years ago. A must, beside Carlsbad, is to spend some time in the Sante Fe area. The town is fascinating, historical and has some outstanding museums. Good campgrounds as well. The Indian ruins are worth a days time. Taos is a must as well, different terrain and culture. Must see is the adobe village. Farmington, in the N.West is a neat town with great fishing and good S.W food. A good place to buy Navajo souvenirs. Close to the 4 corners area.
No problem spending 6-7 days in N. Mexico. Have not even mentioned Ruidoso and Albequerue. Have fun.

Lots to do and see in New Mexico. Chaco Culture, Aztec Ruins, Salmon Ruins if you're in to Anasazi (aka Ancestral Puebloan) ruins. El Malpais and El Morro are worth a visit. Bandelier, northwest of Albuquerque, is another ruins site set in a pine forest and close to Los Alamos Labs. The drive from Albuquerque to Farmington is beautiful. If you're willing to go further north, Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keefe painted, is absolutely incredible and representative of New Mexican beauty.

It's a beautiful state with much, much to see.

I haven't made it there myself yet but everyone I've talked to has enjoyed visiting the Very Large Array Radio Telescope west of Socorro.

Another don't miss is Mesa Verde NP in the four corners area. I can also recommend the Corp of Engineers campground near Dolores, CO and the Ute Mountain Casino campground close to Towaoc.

You've already got about a months worth of places to visit so I guess you have some decisions to make.  ;D  ;D

I'm sure with the information available here on the Forum that we could easily come up with a months worth of things to do in every state of the union.

Besides Carlsbad, make a stop at White Sands N.P., Santa Fe, and the Very Large Array.

When traveling west out of Socorro on Hwy 60, after you pass the VLA at Magdalena, you will come to Pie Town.  You will be just in time for the Pie Festival on Sept 8th.

We should be living full time in Pie Town by then and you can come visit.  September is a great time to be in that area.

If you  are really ambitious, you can hike the Continental Divide

You can easily spend a month in the Four Corners region.  There are tons of places to see and a lot that are really interesting.  If you like hiking, you're in for a real treat because there are some great hikes.  When you visit the national parks, ask about hikes and the rangers will tell you about all kinds of good stuff.
