Roof air filters

I picked up a nice used Coachman Catalina  1993 model over the weekend and starting to clean him up. I pulled down the roof air filters they have a black plastic frame with thin foam in them some of the foam is gone.  Can I use the flat sheet type filtre type you know the white cloth looking stuff and cut to fit or would it be better to stay with the foam. I don't want to put any undue strain or stress on the older unit.  Thanks. Don in KY
 
Thank you for reply  that's what I was thinking.    Great reading on this forum. Lots of good ideas. Now next to tackle the counter top then all should be well.
 
A/Cs use washable 1/4" polyurethane foam filter material, available at Lowes etc:
