Before our last trip when we put the slideout out i heard almost a snapping like sound above the slideout.  The slideout seemed to operate fine when i put it back in so i didn't think too much about it.  However, about 1/2 way to Virginia i noticed the fabric from the slideout awning flapping in the breeze....i pulled over and rolled it all back in manually and then made sure the anti-billowing device was locked in place.  Unfortunately the fabric ripped a bit and now i have to replace it.
There doesn't seem to be any tension in the roller.  I'm wondering if i need to replace the entire device (roller, fabric, etc) or do i just need to replace the fabric?  Should the roller have tension/

any help would be appreciated.  I'd rather replace it myself then paying $$$ at the service center

Those springs can break and let go but you can replace the spring(s) in most awnings without too much trouble, at least on Carefree models. There are instructions on their website but be careful, those springs can be deadly!!!

how do i know if i need to replace the spring?  is the fact that there is no tension good enough diagnosis?

Tension will be released as soon as the fabric is cut. Roll the roller and see if it rolls back. You don't need to roll it as tight as when it's got fabric two or three turns should be enough to know. Roll  the top of the roller away from the coach, clockwise looking aft.
