Veterans day is designated as November 11 and if the eleventh falls on a Sunday, then Veterans Day is celebrated on the following Monday.  Lots of stores and restaurants celebrate Veterans Day with special ''give a ways'' to vets and active duty personel also.  We will have parades with pretty girls and lots of flags and old soldiers marching down main street.  Some will come to see but most will not even know that it is Veterans Day until after the celebration is over.  It seems that Veterans are the first forgotten and, to most, their service and sacrifice means little or nothing to the general public.  I guess people are too busy with their own lives to tell a Vet. ''Thanks for your service to this nation''  .....  They never seem to realize that, without the Veteran, we would be speaking German or Japanese and this great country would be nothing like it is now.
With the permission of the staff I would ask permission to ''re-post'' something I wrote some time ago as my tribute to ALL VETERANS.

I AM A VETERAN

As a veteran I ask for nothing from you. I did what I have done for my Country and my fellow fighting personnel. I did it because it had to be done and because if I had not done it we would not have this great country and the freedoms we so take for granted today.
I am a veteran and very proud of my service to this great country...

I am but one of the millions of men and women that gave Uncle Sam a blank check with my name on it and told him that he could write any amount up to and including my life cashable  at his request...... I am a veteran

I did this so you could have freedom of speech and religion. I did this so you would have the right to burn my flag without fear of persecution. All these things I have done for you so that you might be free and enjoy the freedom of this great country..
I am one of millions of un-appreciated men and women that gave a portion of my life in service to this country and I did it because it had to be done and I would do it again, without hesitation, should the need arise.
I am a veteran ??.. GOD BLESS AMERICA
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AND BRING THEM HOME SAFE AND SOON
GOD BLESS OUR VETS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THIS GREAT NATION
Seajay the sailor man
I wrote this with respect to the millions of men and women that have given their lives in support of this great country and have defended our freedoms all over the world.  Most of them worked for less pay than you can make at Mc 'D's' flippin burgers and askin if you want to ''Biggie them Fries sir?''
I wrote it for them .... NOT FOR ME........

Thank you for your service to all the veterans here on the Forum. Go out and enjoy a free meal ... there are a lot of places giving freebies to veterans, a small thank you.

I'll add my big THANKS to all who served.

Yesterday, November 10th, was also the 237th birthday of the US Marine Corps.

This afternoon we attend a Veterans Day concert held at a theatre in a nearby town, following the Veterans Day parade.

What a wonderful Veterans Day concert, and a fitting tribute to our veterans. One of the 'numbers' sung was a medley of the songs from each of the five branches of the service. Vets and their families were asked to stand when they heard "their song". The entire theatre broke into applause as they stood.

Here is a list I received for free veterans day dinner. Thank you for your service......

Happy Veterans Day Folks.

I personally enjoy this day more and more every year.  Got out of the Corps (with 11yrs of service) 18yrs ago.... My, how time goes by!  Enjoy your day fellow Vet's.

Seajay,

I wish I had been there with you in Concord Green to wisper "Like hell" with you. Since I missed that one I'll have to settle for "D" day and the liberation of Holland and Bomber Command and a couple of others.  Your war of independence ranks in the top three human accomplishments of modern times.  I salute your flag in memory of the one with the stars in a circle.    Something to be very proud of to be sure!

This is the prayer from the Book of Common Prayer prayed yesterday in most North American Episcopal and Anglican Churches:

25. For those in the Armed Forces of our Country

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and
keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home
and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly
grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give
them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant
    them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

My Aunt and Uncle own a Meineke Auto shop in San Angelo, Texas.  I spent the afternoon helping at the shop because all Meineke's in the US gave away free Basic oil changes to Veterans and those serving now or their spouses.  We were at 120 oil changes when I left at 1630.  It was a wonderful afternoon.

Seajay,

I enjoyed your salute to Vetrans.  A little story as to how much it means to me.  In doing the family genealogy and finding work of other rearchers, I found out my mother's family, her direct line, has had someone in the military since the French and Indian wars till the iraq war in 1991.  At least one was in Andersonville during the Civil war, one was killed at Pearl Harbor and so on for almost 300 years

None of my brothers nor any descendants were involved in 1991 nor have been till just recently.  One bother's grand son has recently enlisted and is now in the Marine Corps. Of myself and my 4 brothers, 4 served in the services, 3 Army and one AF.

Thank you my Canadian Friend for your Salute.

I read the replies from you guys about Veterans Day and I can not tell you how proud it makes me feel to know that I am a 'tiny part' of such a fine group of people.  I walk a little taller and smile a little bigger knowing that there are Vets out there that are proud of their service to this great nation.
Many many thanks for all the kind words about my post and a milllion zillion thank you's for your service to this great nation.
God bless you all for your service .........cj..

We have moved back to Indiana, we aren't here all the time yet, in a couple weeks and back out moving things.

When I drove in last week it was a Sunday.  The little town had flags all the way through it from way north of city limits and they had put the flags in front of our house too which is just outside the city limits on the south side.

They know that my FIL, husband, his brother, and our son are all veterans.  I thought it was such a nice touch.  But considering hubby only lived 3 miles from here they all know him well.

Patriotism is still alive and well in rural Americana.

I tracked back in my maternal grandmothers family and goodness, they were confederates as was dads great aunts family from what I hear.  Oops!  Well they were still military.
