We are thinking of an 8 day trip and trying to decide where to go. We want to stay out of winter weather as much as possible. We were thinking of going east as far as Big Bend, Texas or north west to Death Valley. Anyway we are looking for suggestion for areas and campgrounds within about 800 miles of the Phoenix area. Figuring about 2 days going, 4 days there and 2 days coming back. In general, we are looking for scenic areas, not cities. Thanks.

Death Valley is great this time of year and it is defintely scenic. No hookups at the NPS campgrounds but lots of sun and scenery. Also lots of wind.
Pahrump is nice, Terrible's is outside of town and you can get one free night for every $25 you spend on fuel. Full hookups.
Salton Sea and Anza Borrego are beautiful and warm this time of year.

We are just finishing up one trip and had another last November that are within 1 day's drive of Phoenix and a ton of fun. Our current trip centered on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Globe..In all the years we lived in the Valley we had never spent time east of Mesa. The complete Apache Trail had some of the most beautiful scenery we have seen in the US. Other highlights included a trip to the Boyce-Thompson Arboretum and the Besh ba Gowah Archeological park in Globe. We've spent 6 days here and have really had a great time and seen and learned about a lot of things we hadn't heard of before.
Last November, our RV club spen a week in Bisbee and Huachuca City (Tombestone Territiories RV Park). Even tho we've been to Bisbee a couple of times, we always find something new to do; a day in Naco, Mexico, a day in Douglas, AZ including crossing into Agua Prieta, Mexico, a hamburger (again) at Dot's Diner. From Huachuca City we spent time at Fort Huachuca (Army Intelligence school), Sonoita wineries, Tombstone, Karchner Caverns and Patagonia.
With less than 1 day's travel for either of these 2 trips, more time can be spent enjoying and touring. Send me an email if you need a more detailed itnerary.

We recently spent time camping at Catalina State Park just west of Tucson. It was beautiful and lots to see and do in the Tucson area. Terry visited theTitan Missle Museum while I shopped at Tubac, an artist enclave. We toured the Sonoran Desert Museum, a must see. We toured Mt. Lemon and Sibina (?) Canyon Tuscon is spread out and we put many miles on car but it was all worth while. Lots of shops and restaurants in the area too.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree with everyones comments regarding the places in Arizona, but after living in AZ for 20 years, we've pretty much been most places in the state. We haven't done Antelope Canyon near Paige yet but were saving that for another season.
And Bernie is right on in his remarks about the Apache Trail, every visitor to the Phoenix area should take that drive. It's an easy drive but has terrifying vistas to our family from out east. ;D

We will be leaving Lake Havasu on Friday, the 23rd. And arriving in Salome the same day. We will be there until Friday March 2nd. And will be arriving at Camp Verde the same day. Will be there for 2 weeks.
Which is closer to you, Salome or Verde?
