Any chance it's a combination of the low idle speed and the work on the engine caused by the steering fluid pump in the corner? 

I have used the coleman powermate 2500 with good luck.  It will run the ac or coffee pot, but not both at once.  And it is super quiet.  I don't know about the quality, but mine has been working for 3 years now.

That makes perfect sense.  It's a 2004 serial number, so corrosion is absolutely a posibility.  I will tear into it tonight and see what I can find. THANKS!!
