There is a flip side, not that it is earth-shaking. I had my late wife's SS, kept until I was 72. At that point, I switched to mine. While the clerk was calculating it, she told me that my military service counted as 4 years, maxed out. Those 4 years replaced years where I had not maxed out on earned income, and increased my SS pension. This in spite of the fact that I did not pay into SS, when I was in the service.
The increase for military service was a little less than $100 a month. Not a huge lot of money, but better than a poke in the eye with a frozen stick.
