TX GOV Abbott stated,

"Social distancing is our best tool to curb the spread of COVID-19 and save lives," Abbott said in the release. "The temporary closure of our state parks and historic sites will help us achieve this goal by preventing the gathering of large groups of people. I urge all Texans to continue to stay at home except for essential services as we respond to COVID-19. By following these social distance practices, we will overcome this challenge together."

TPWD staff will continue the upkeep of the parks during the closures, the department said in a separate news release.

The Texas State Parks Customer Service Center is also working to contact customers who had booked overnight reservations to reimburse all stays scheduled through the reservation system. Bookings for groups and facilities have been cancelled until April 30. Day passes will also be refunded. Affected reservations and passes will not be charged the usual penalties.

Those with upcoming reservations do not need to contact the customer service center to receive their refunds. TPWD said customer service agents are reaching out to impacted customers in order of arrival date.
