99WinAdventurer37G, you forgot Connecticut.  Their law says that you can't even bring an unloaded handgun through the state.

As has been stated previously I think that you're best bet is a local gun shop.  If you don't leave the weapon over nite then they don't have to log it into their system and if you offer to pay them a couple of bucks they'd probably be more than happy to store it for you while you're on base.

I've considered this option a few times since one of my hobbies is shooting and we never leave home without my toys so to speak.  We'd love to travel in Canada one of these days but the prohibition on guns has prevented us from spending our U.S. dollars in their country.  Kinda the same reason I have no interest in crossing into California.

No, I didn't forget Connecticut.  So many people listen to scuttlebutt instead of checking the laws. I did this for years.  I listened to people telling me it was illegal to have a gun in a commercial motor vehicle.  Then after consulting the law, I found this rumor was not true.  Here is the federal law concerning transporting a firearm.:

18 U.S. Code ? 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver?s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Amen brother.  Add Mexico to that list.

When we go to the Lincoln National Forest, we have to pass through a Border Patrol checkpoint on Hwy 54.  My 1911A is holstered under the dash of the truck.  I've gotten some odd looks from some of the younger agents from time to time.  I always ensure one arm on the door with the window down and the other on the wheel so they don't get fidgety....

I still say leave the firearm in the RV and rent a car for the day if you're not pulling a toad.

Leave it home.  If you do bring it out of your home state check the laws. And if you ccw is good their.    In places like NYC nj or DC. You will be arrested on the spot just for having a hand gun and don't get me started on hollow point ammo restrictions.      My ccw total legal in pa. Cross a bridge to nj.  And I'm looking at 10 years in prison....  Dont risk it

So Joe, does that mean that I along with the millions of Canadians who are prohibited to bring guns into the USA, or to buy them once here, should not come and spend the tens of billions we spend here annually?

I'm sorry, but you're wrong, see 18 U.S. Code ? 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms.

I enjoy the occasional firearms thread.
They start so plain and simple.
Then we add lots of salt and butter. I like to pair it with a Funky Buddha Last Snow Porter..
Merry Christmas!

Wrong again.  That only applys if your traveling from point to point.  Once you stop for anything.  Your subject to local and state laws....... Theirs a Texan in nj prison. That was sleeping in his car at a rest area. In nj.    Cops searched his car " for safety reason" found his gun with hollow point ammo.  And he still in prison today.  Their also another pending case of a mother from pa pulled over in nj.  And the instate transport laws dident help her either.  That's still pending in court

So then, according to the article he was not following the federal law, as two guns were in plain sight.

Had he;
"during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver?s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console."
He would not have been arrested in the first place.  I'm done with this thread, I'll follow the law, others can follow rumors.  Always seek legal advice from a competent firearms lawyer, and always treat law enforcement officers with utmost respect and courtesy.  Stay safe out there.

State law supersedes Federal law, that is a fact. The law you keep posting is the Federal law, yes. However, as you travel through the states you ARE subject to their local/state laws. I am an avid gun rights supporter, and gun owner. I have researched this very subject at length. There is no single law/paragraph/section that deals with the transport of firearms across multiple states by civilians. The only ones who can lawfully transport firearms with minimal/no hassle is current & retired LEO's. The rest of us need to carefully plan any travel with a firearm. Personally, I do not travel to/through a state with unConstitutional gun laws for recreation. Unfortunately I live in New England, and I have a few of those unConstitutional hives just south of me.... :-\

I'm certainly not supporting the subject gentlemen's conviction, this is an example of unConstitutional laws at work...nothing more. However, those of us that are informed gun owners would make better decisions about the transport of our firearms.

Ed,

I'm kind of at a loss as to how you read that into my post.

I'm one of those Americans who believes that I have a right to protect myself and my family and I take it very seriously.  Having been a law enforcement contractor for a number of years in a previous life I saw first hand what humans can do to each other.  Please understand that there are a lot of Americans who don't understand society in Canada just as there are many Canadians who have no true understanding of culture here in the U.S.A.  Here in my home country I have the constitutional right to protect myself and my family (yours too incidentally).  In Canada I have no such right and should I violate your laws would be subject to incarceration and since I left the sanctity of the U.S.A. I personally would not expect my government to come to my aid nor should they.  I make the conscious choice to remain in the U.S.A. for numerous reasons and the ability to carry a firearm is but a small one.

You as a Canadian have the right to enter our country and spend your money and enjoy some of the wonders outside of the Great White North and I welcome our frozen northern neighbors to do just that.  In fact I fully disagree with your NOT being able to bring firearms into the U.S.A. although I do believe that the right to carry should be reserved only for our citizens.  In years gone by when I was a competitive shooter I shot with many Canadians when a simpler time meant that non-citizens could in fact more easily bring firearms into our country.

Unfortunately some Canadians and some Americans have a tendency to look down their noses at each other simply because neither have a working knowledge of the society in which the other lives.  We as Americans sometimes have a hard time understanding why people would want to live under socialism and extreme taxation, (although we're learning first hand).  In my experience (an encounter with a husband and wife from Quebec who were teachers) there are also Canadians who have serious lack of understanding of how our society works and the reasons for our Constitution.

By all means come to the U.S.A., spend your money and enjoy the above freezing temperatures that our southern states offer in the cold frozen months of winter up north.  In fact if you want to shoot but are unable to bring your toys send me a pm and if you're in the area I am I'll be happy to take you out to get  your fix of shooting.

LOL, I'm originally from MA (Salem). My parents moved up into NH when I was kid, been here about 30 years now...wouldn't have it any other way! :D

Right now I live in Seabrook NH. Once I'm done with the current house project (house built in 1790, complete gut & rebuild, conversion to a 2 family) then I'll moving a little west (west, as in NH more central NH...lol).
