We will  be driving the Al Can highway in May, leaving Iowa and ending in Anchorage. Any advise on how to stay in touch (at least for emergency purposes) while in Canada, even remote areas. We have the newest verizon smart phone- the motorola droid with sattelite technology and GPS. Has anyone had any experience with cell phone service in Canada, Yukon? Are CB radios still  in use and may they be a more reliable alternative for an emergency?

Verizon does have a Canada plan that you can add to your US plan.  However, don't expect service in the upper reaches of Alberta, British Columbia, and certainly not Yukon!  Verizon has a map on their website showing the areas of Canada they cover...you'll see that it won't help you very much on your trip to Alaska.

I would suggest getting a CB radio for emergencies.  You might also want to consider the Spot Messenger, http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=102.
