Invertor, alternator, microwave oven, and saying goodbye to the generator...

thank you all for your help! Some more details: the 300W inverter we use while highway driving is connected to the main coach battery and ground, probably about 6 feet of 4ga wiring. Our driving habits are: we tend to drive either long days (15-17hrs) and "wall mart camp" or drive short days...

Invertor, alternator, microwave oven, and saying goodbye to the generator...

Hi All,   Thanks again for being my favorite RV site on the web! More trouble with my Generac/ Guardian RV generator, and I'm getting sick of it.  The voltage regulator went out on day 1 of a 31-day TX-Alaska-Tx trip this year. The only thing we use our generator for, is microwaving meals...

    Big Bend Texas

thank you all for your wonderful suggestions!  Any trouble with smugglers/ violence/ crime in the park? I hear there's a horse ride you can take inside the park that takes you into Mexico with passport, but I have no idea if it's safe for wife + bunch of kids...

    Big Bend Texas

Anyone camp at Big Bend in the winter?  I'm planning a trip around Christmas/ New Years, and was wondering what the weather is like.  Weather.com shows Dec average low of 37F and avg high of 62F, but that can mean a lot of things.  Any idea what the chances of ti being <40s during the day, or...

Water hose bib (valve) safe for drinking

All brass fittings either say "not intended for use with water for human consumption" or "lead free brass...conforms to  code XXX".  I can find all other brass fitting in the latter, except for house bibs/valves.

Water hose bib (valve) safe for drinking

I am building an RV garage that will enclose my RV, sometimes while guests stay in it.  All the garden hose valves (house bibs or water heater drain valves) I find are labeled "not for human consumption".  Any ideas where I can get a connection/ valve that will fit a standard garden hose thread...

    Class A or C?

I would advise you buy the newest unit you can afford, but beyond that, I would recommend a Class C for 2 reasons: Construction and  operating costs. Construction: If you buy a large Class A on a greyhound bus frame, you are getting a very solid, very tested, very well-thought out frame (that...

    Charging house battery ?

Thanks Dakota!  I used to store it offsite, but now it's at my home and in an indoor garage, with hookups.  I just replaced my house battery, after running with it for 3-4 yrs near-death.  Overnights w/ no hookups got pretty cold when the furnace blower quits halfway through the night :)  The...

    Charging house battery ?

Thanks again, Gary!  Without swapping out my unit (P7300) I guess I'll just plug it in maybe 2 weeks/ month.  I know you're not supposed to keep them at lower than 50% charge, but I don't have a way to easily measure that (RV status panel is no help here).

    Generator gas usage

Thanks, Gary!  I'll have to do some crawling around.  Any hints where I'll find it?  (does the pick-up tube usually go into the tank near the fill-hose (hose you pump gas into at the station) or could it be sticking into the tank from *any* direction? thanks again!

    Generator gas usage

My Class C has a 1/4 tank shut off, and it works VERY accurately.  I *really* want to let the generator run no matter what (even if our tank is nearly dry).  What's the easiest way to do this?  Do I need to pull the generator's fuel line from the gas tank, and extend it?  Or just push it in...

    Charging house battery ?

Holy cow, that's crazy-complicated!  I just read my house-power unit is a Paralax 7300, and it shrinks down the charge to "only a few hundred milliamps" after a while.

    4.9 MPG ??? wow

I have a gas-engine Class C, 22ft, which is much smaller and lighter obviously.  Just to speak to the "slow down" idea: My gas mileage just tanks if I go too much faster than 55MPH.  I can manage >10MPG at 63MPH on the highway.  I'm not retired, so stealing away from work days on my trips, and...

    Charging house battery ?

My buddy's 14k lb Diesel 1-ton pickup threw some codes at him and refused to start, so I lent him my ODBII reader to clear them.  After he did, his engine worked fine, and he got another 2MPG out of it.  Sometimes the trade-off for fuel efficiency and emissions your engine's computer made...
