Tell that to the TSA guy standing there. I traveled with the exact same stuff each time and I was instructed to do different combinations of laptop(s) in, out of the case, 1 thing per bin, everything in the bin, same with the shoes - sometimes by themselves and sometimes with other stuff. Whatever, it's just a game but I don't like being the the guy holding up the line. Virtually zero metal or liquid anything in my carry on so at least that sails through. Watching the xray screen by the conveyor it's amazing how much crap people take in their bags.

They were in one of the carry-on bags and, when I went to remove them to display/declare, I was told "leave everything in your bags" (inc laptop and other electronics). So I don't really know the answer to your question 🤔
Probably due to new scanners at some airports. They're great - you no longer have to empty your laptopn tablet, kindle etc. I'm sure you'd have known if there was a problem.

Enjoy your trip and the birthday!

That's probably true, although I could swear some folks were removing their electronics and putting them in bins to run through the xray machine..

Thanks. This grandson has long wanted to visit the casino on his 21st, and that was what he wanted for his birthday. He's invited a number of parents of hockey players in his brother's hockey team. He doesn't know we're coming, and Chris wanted to surprise him.

An update from our return trip. The pouch containing the gel packs, sans medication, was in Chris' carry-on. TSA opened it up and, when Chris explained what we'd used it for, the agent said "just make sure they're frozen next time, and there will be no issue". I'd forgotten to pop them in the freezer last night.

So you can carry more than 3.4 oz of liquids or gels if they are frozen?

Which kind of brings up a question I've had but never asked TSA. How come they let me on the plane with a 6 oz tube of toothpaste in my bag? Don't they know that bombs and incendiaries are commonly made from pastes? I have a tube of Coghlan's Fire Paste I use as a fire-starter that I keep in my camping bag. It would be a fairly simple matter to empty the toothpaste tube and refill it with that flammable paste. Then one strike-anywhere match would be enough to get it going.
