Were just getting started here. Got a nice 2008 Explorer for the tow rig. Has the 3/4 tow package installed, V6 4x4. Were looking into the larger size popups. Thinking about a flagstaff 625D.

Anyway, my first official question here is what exactly does the class 3-4 tow package consist of besides the 7 wire plug and the heavy receiver hitch?
Second, is there an electric trailer brake system installed as part of the tow package or is this an aftermarket item I need to buy?

Sorry, the information I'm looking for seems hard to come by on the web for some reason.

Thanks for the help!

No problem with the posting location - the staff is here to handle stuff like that.

Your best resource for the exact nature of the tow package on your Explorer is the Ford Customer Assist 800 line, but they may only know that the tow package gives a certain tow rating (max weight that can be towed). Sometimes the tow package includes a heavier duty cooling system, but in many newer vehicles the cooling system is already sized large enough to handle extreme demands.  Frankly, I don't think you need be concerned about exactly what is in it either. Just pay attention to the tow rating number. The Trailer Life guide for 2008 hows a 4WD V6 Explorer with tow package at 5225 lbs, but that has to be decreased if the SUV carries more than just a driver. We generally suggest decreasing the max tow rating by 10% to allow for the weight of passengers, gear, hitch, etc., so you should be looking at trailers that have a GVWR under 4700 lbs.

The Explorer probably has wiring for a brake controller but not the controller itself. I recommend any of the Tekonsha Prodigy (P) series controllers.

Thanks Gary, thats helpful. Were looking at 3500# trailer weight loaded so I should have no big concerns.

Here is some brake controller info that may help. There are wiring harnesses available that mate a controller to the factory wiring in an Explorer.

Thanks again, got one of the 90885 units with wire on order. Went to Amazon and saved 20 bucks.
