Hi guys.  I hate to come to you only when I'm having problems, but this one's threatening to put the brakes on my trip through the Sawtooths.

I'm trying to have my propane tank filled for the first time since I bought the rig two weeks ago.  Unfortunately, there's some sort of leak in the fill valve that's causing propane to shoot out the sides when it's being filled.  Three different propane filler-upper-guys had the same issue.  According to the last one, he thinks that the fill valve is cracked and preventing the tank from pressurizing.

I'm having trouble believing that it's truly broken, since it was sold to me with a half tank remaining.

Does anyone have experience with something like this?  Are propane systems fairly standardized, or am I going to be out of luck trying to find a suitable replacement?  I have an older 1986 Class C (Chevy Dolphin, built on a G30 van chassis), if it makes a difference.  Thanks in advance!

The fittings on propane tanks can be easily replaced by a qualified propane dealer - check your yellow pages...

If your tank is bolted to the frame of your RV, it may have to be unbolted and taken to the propane guys to be fixed properly...

Getting the fitting replaces if far cheaper than looking for a replacement tank...

There is nothing unique about an RV LP tank. Drive it to a good propane/gas services company and get it inspected by someone other than a pump jockey. The filler connection is standard and not a delicate mechanism. Basically just a coarse threaded pipe with a check valve inside. Not likely to break or crack, but there maybe some other simple problem.

I think it's go to be the check valve that's stuck open, because to my (untrained) eye there's nothing that's obviously cracked or broken.

Thanks for the tips, guys-- I found a place down in Jerome, ID that's going to take a look.

take it to a certified propane specialist, LP gas is nothing to be messing with and should only be worked on by a specialist.
