Hi. We currently have a pull behind and want to upgrade to a new fifth wheel. I never thought this would be so difficult. I feel like we've looked at everything. My husband and I have three kids: 6 year old boy, 12 year old girl, 14 year old girl. Most likely, each kid will have a friend with them which makes a total of eight people. In the luxury fifth wheels we like, this is just not possible. One thing that could have worked is a bunk house but the beds are not what we want. None of the kids want to sleep in those bunks as they're not comfortable. If they have a sofa bed, it's a jack knife and not a real pull out bed aka not as comfortable. Theoretically, a rear living would have been good but the girls would have a place to sleep and the boys wouldn't. We also considered a mid bunk but didn't like any as the one with a relatively good set up (compass) had a jack knife sofa rather than a pull out.
The other thing we considered is a toy hauler. Today we looked at a Thunderbolt 380AMP that had a great layout (additional seating besides just the long party seating). But are the kids going to want to sleep in toy hauler beds? Are they more comfortable than they look? Also, we have a 2016 Dodge Ram 2500. The tow capacity on our vin states 17,100 rather than 17,500. If the weight on this toy hauler is 15,400, can we safely pull it with our ram? We've heard yes and we've heard no.
We don't want to make another mistake. We made one with our pull behind. The sales guy told us we could pull it easily with my Yukon Denali. As first time RV owners, we later found out that wasn't the case. So, my husband traded in his jeep so we could get the Ram. Now that he can pull more, we want a fifth wheel.
I would really, really appreciate any ideas. Budget is a wide range: $65k (where I'd like to be) to $90k (we might need to go that high to get what we want). We live in Fort Worth, TX.
Thanks so much!
Jennifer
